សំឡេង (somleng) is the Khmer word for sound, voice, and the ring of an instrument.
Somleng Studio is an independent music project creating original Khmer songs with the help of AI. Every track starts with a story, a mood, and a melody that belongs to Cambodia, and is finished with modern production so it sounds at home anywhere in the world.
Why Khmer, why now
Cambodia has one of the richest musical histories in Southeast Asia, from the golden-age crooners of the 1960s to the pinpeat ensembles that still open every ceremony. Much of that sound was almost lost. Somleng Studio exists to keep adding to it: new songs, in Khmer, that sound like today.
How the music is made
Every song starts the old way, with a story and a mood. We write the lyrics in Khmer, choose a style, and then use generative AI tools to compose, arrange, and perform. We curate dozens of takes, edit, master, and design the cover art. The AI is the instrument; the taste is ours.
We label everything as AI-assisted. We think that honesty matters, and we think the songs stand on their own.
